Science Vampires

Vampires have existed in myths and legends have existed for centuries. Early myths were often steeped with superstition, fear, and curses. The modern vampire, however, is just as often a product of science or disease that can be rationally explained (Blade, Daybreakers, etc.). What are the advantages and disadvantages to writing or reading in this version?
